JT Toppin (41 points) leads No. 12 Texas Tech past ASU in 2 OTs

JT Toppin scored a career-high 41 points and secured a steal with 33 seconds remaining in the second overtime as No. 12 Texas Tech escaped with a wild 111-106 win over Arizona State on Wednesday in Lubbock, Texas.

Toppin logged a total of eight points in the OTs. He made 17 of 22 shots from the field overall and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds. His dunk on an assist from Darrion Williams gave the Red Raiders (19-5, 10-3 Big 12) a three-point lead with just under a minute remaining in the second overtime.

Shawn Phillips Jr.’s jumper pulled the Sun Devils (12-12, 3-10) within one, but Texas Tech made four of six free throws in the waning seconds to hold on for the victory.

In a tie game with less than 20 seconds remaining in the first overtime, the Red Raiders’ Christian Anderson poked the ball loose from Alston Mason near midcourt, which appeared to set up a game-winning fastbreak layup for Kerwin Walton. However, BJ Freeman ran him down and made a game-saving block off the glass.

Texas Tech avoided what would have been its first consecutive losses of the season, having fallen 82-73 at then-No. 20 Arizona on Saturday.

Arizona State dropped its fourth consecutive game despite a heroic effort from Adam Miller, who led the Sun Devils with 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting. Freeman added 21 points, Mason had 16 and Phillips contributed 15.

The back-and-forth thriller included 18 lead changes and highlighted exceptional shooting by both teams. Texas Tech finished at 57.4 percent from the field while Arizona State shot 55.6 percent.

At the end of regulation, Arizona State took a two-point lead with 10 seconds left on Miller’s running left-handed jumper. Moments later, however, Texas Tech forced overtime when Chance McMillian put in the rebound of Elijah Hawkins’ missed layup with less than a second left.

Williams finished with 27 points, McMillian had 14, Walton put up 13 and Anderson had 10.
